Uzbekistan train vs private transfer

An honest, leg-by-leg comparison — including when the train is the better choice.

The train or a private car? Both are good ways to cross Uzbekistan. The right choice depends on the leg, your group size and how much luggage you're carrying.

Leg by leg

LegTrainPrivate car
Tashkent → SamarkandAbout 2–2.5 hours on the Afrosiyob high-speed train4–4.5 hours door to door
Samarkand → BukharaAbout 1.5–2 hours on the Afrosiyob3.5–4 hours door to door
Bukhara → KhivaAbout 5–7 hours depending on the service; not every day6–7 hours door to door
Urgench → KhivaNo convenient rail option from the airport30–40 minutes

Train times are station to station. Add the ride to the station, arriving early for security checks, and the ride from the station to your hotel.

When the train makes sense

  • You're travelling light, solo or as a couple.
  • You've booked tickets well ahead for the date you need.
  • Speed matters more than flexibility on the Tashkent–Samarkand–Bukhara section.

When a private transfer makes sense

  • You're three or more people — the price is per vehicle, not per seat.
  • You have big suitcases, children or limited mobility.
  • Trains are sold out, or don't run at the time you want.
  • You're arriving on a flight and want to go straight on.
  • You want to stop on the way — Gijduvan, Rabat-i-Malik or a desert café.

What a private car costs per person

Train tickets are priced per seat; a private car is priced per vehicle. These tables divide our fixed price by the number of people, using the smallest vehicle that fits your group. Compare them with train fares for your date on the official Uzbekistan Railways ticket site — and add the taxis to and from the stations.

Mixing both

Many travellers do both: the fast train from Tashkent to Samarkand, then a private car for Bukhara to Khiva and the fortresses. Every leg on our routes page can be booked on its own.

Questions

Is the Afrosiyob train faster than a car?
Yes, between Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara the high-speed train is faster station to station. Door to door, the gap is smaller once you add the rides to and from the stations.
Is a private transfer cheaper than the train?
For one or two people the train is usually cheaper. For three or more, a private car can cost about the same per person, because you pay per vehicle.
