Book this transferThe Samarkand to Bukhara journey
The road between Samarkand and Bukhara is about 270 km and usually takes 3.5 to 4 hours. It follows the Zarafshan valley west, past Navoiy, through the farmland that fed the Silk Road cities for centuries.
Bukhara's historic centre is compact and partly pedestrian, so your driver takes you as close to your hotel as the streets allow. Most guesthouses around Lyab-i Hauz can be reached by car or with a very short walk.
Want to see more on the way? Ask for a stop at the Gijduvan ceramics workshops near Bukhara, or at the caravanserai ruins of Rabat-i-Malik and the Sardoba cistern along the old road. Longer detours are quoted with your booking.

Samarkand to Bukhara by train or private transfer?
An honest comparison. Both are good options — it depends on your plans. Train vs private transfer, leg by leg.
By train
The Afrosiyob train covers Samarkand to Bukhara in around 1.5 to 2 hours. It is quick and comfortable, but the stations are outside the historic centres, and popular departures sell out.
By private car Door to door
The car is slower on paper but saves the station transfers at both ends and lets you stop at places the train passes by. For families or groups of three or more, it is often the better value.
What the car costs per person
The price is per vehicle, so it gets cheaper per person as your group grows. Compare with train tickets for the same number of people — and remember the taxis to and from the stations.
