How to get from Tashkent to Khiva
Fly, take the train, or cross the country by road in stages — the options compared, with our per-vehicle prices for each leg.
Khiva is at the far western end of Uzbekistan's Silk Road route, more than 1,000 km from Tashkent by road. There is no sensible single-day drive for most travellers, so the question is really which combination suits your trip: a flight, the train, or the road in stages.
Option 1: Fly to Urgench, then a 30-minute transfer
The fastest way is a domestic flight from Tashkent to Urgench. We don't sell flights — book them directly with the airline — but we meet you at Urgench Airport (UGC). The Urgench Airport to Khiva transfer takes 30–40 minutes and costs $25 for a sedan (price per vehicle).
Option 2: By road in stages
Most travellers who go overland see the cities on the way. Each leg is a separate private transfer with a fixed price per vehicle, so you choose where to stay:
| Route | Sedan | Minivan | How it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tashkent → Samarkand → Bukhara → Khiva | $300 | $725 | Three drives, usually with nights in Samarkand and Bukhara |
| Tashkent → Bukhara → Khiva | $285 | $560 | Two long drives, with a night in Bukhara |
| Samarkand → Bukhara → Khiva | $200 | $470 | From Samarkand, with a night in Bukhara |
Totals are the published prices of each leg added together, per vehicle. See the individual legs: Tashkent to Samarkand, Samarkand to Bukhara, Tashkent to Bukhara and Bukhara to Khiva.
Option 3: By train
Trains also run from Tashkent towards Urgench and Khiva. The journey is long, so check the current timetable and book ahead. Many travellers combine options — for example the fast train from Tashkent to Samarkand or Bukhara, then a private car across the desert to Khiva. Our train vs private transfer guide compares each leg.
Option 4: A direct drive
A non-stop drive from Tashkent to Khiva means 12 hours or more on the road. It's possible, but tiring; we quote it on request if it's what you need.
Which should you choose?
- Short on time: fly to Urgench and take the transfer to Khiva.
- Want to see Uzbekistan: go by road in stages and spend a night or two in Samarkand and Bukhara.
- Travelling as a family or group: a minivan is one price for up to 7 people, which often beats several flight or train tickets.
