Taxis in Uzbekistan
Getting around by car is easy in Uzbekistan once you know the options: app taxis in the cities, shared taxis between them, and private transfers.
In the cities: ride-hailing apps
In Tashkent and the other big cities most people order a car through a ride-hailing app such as Yandex Go. You see the price before you ride, the route is tracked and you can pay by card or cash. You need mobile data, so buy a local SIM at the airport (bring your passport).
At airports and stations
Drivers waiting at arrivals, stations and tourist sights often ask visitors several times the app price. At Tashkent airport, Yandex Go cars and several licensed taxi services are allowed to pick up right in front of the terminal (Spot.uz, December 2025), so you don't have to accept the first offer you get inside. Our Tashkent airport taxi guide compares the options.
Street taxis
If you take a street taxi, agree the fare before you get in, in Uzbek som, and confirm it is for the whole car, not per person.
Between cities: shared taxis
Shared taxis leave from stands in each city when every seat is filled. They are cheap but you wait for other passengers, share the car and have little room for luggage. See shared taxi vs private transfer.
Between cities: private transfers
A private transfer is a car and driver for your group only, booked in advance at a fixed price per vehicle. For example Tashkent to Samarkand is $100 for a sedan (4–4.5 hours), and Samarkand to Bukhara $100 (3.5–4 hours). See all transfer prices per car and per person.
Is it safe?
Uzbekistan is generally a safe country to travel in, and app taxis and booked transfers are the most predictable options: the price and the car are agreed before you ride. Keep a copy of your booking, share your trip with someone if travelling alone at night, and wear your seat belt.
