The Tashkent to Khiva journey

Tashkent to Khiva is roughly 1,000 km by road. Driven in one go it takes 13 to 15 hours with stops, so most travellers who go by car split it into two days, with a night in Samarkand or Bukhara on the way.

The road follows the main Silk Road line: south-west to Samarkand, west through the Zarafshan valley to Bukhara, then across the Kyzylkum desert and along the Amu Darya into the Khorezm oasis around Khiva.

If you want to save time, the alternative is to fly from Tashkent to Urgench, or take the train, and then do the 30–40 minute transfer from Urgench to Khiva. Our guide to Tashkent–Khiva compares every option.

  • Anyone who missed a flight or a sold-out train
