Nukus
Capital of Karakalpakstan, home to the Savitsky Museum and the starting point for Aral Sea trips.
What is Nukus?
Nukus is the capital of Karakalpakstan and home to the Savitsky Museum, one of the largest collections of Soviet avant-garde art outside Moscow — a stop worth building real time into your itinerary for, not just a photo on the way through.
It's also the usual base for a day trip toward the former Aral Sea shoreline near Moynaq, around 200 km and roughly 3–3.5 hours each way across open desert road. We arrange this as a private return transfer with the driver waiting on-site rather than a scheduled group tour.
Why visit
- Savitsky Museum — A world-renowned collection of banned Soviet-era avant-garde art.
- Moynaq ship graveyard — Rusting fishing boats stranded on the former seabed.
- Karakalpakstan State Museum — Local history and culture of the autonomous republic.
