Shakhrisabz
Amir Timur's home town, over the mountains from Samarkand, with the ruins of the Ak-Saray palace.
What is Shakhrisabz?
Shakhrisabz was the birthplace of Amir Timur, and the ruins of his Ak-Saray Palace still give a sense of the scale he built at — it's one of the most rewarding half-day trips out of Samarkand.
The drive from Samarkand takes roughly 1.5–2 hours over the mountain pass, and most visitors do it as a there-and-back day trip with the same driver rather than an overnight stay, so the price is for a return trip with the driver's waiting time included.
Why visit
- Ak-Saray Palace ruins — The remaining gateway of Timur's summer palace.
- Dorut Tilavat Complex — A cluster of mausoleums and mosques.
- Kok Gumbaz Mosque — A blue-domed 15th-century mosque.
