About this experience
Samarkand was once famous across the Islamic world for its paper, made from the bark of mulberry trees. The craft almost disappeared and has been revived in the village of Konigil, just outside the city, where paper is still made by hand using water-powered mills.
You'll see each stage of the process — stripping and boiling the bark, pounding the fibres, forming and polishing the sheets — and have the chance to try a step yourself. It's an easy half-day to combine with a drive out of the city.
